Paris CDG Airport EES: Entry/Exit System & Passport Control

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully live at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). Since France completed its switch-over on 10 April 2026, every non-EU traveller arriving at or leaving CDG is registered in a shared biometric database instead of having their passport stamped by hand. This guide explains who has to register, exactly what happens at passport control, how long the queues actually run at each terminal, and how to get through faster.

How long is the EES wait at Paris CDG?

Allow 60 to 120 minutes for non-EU passport control at CDG during busy periods, and up to three hours at Terminal 2E in the summer peak. Off-peak arrivals often clear in 20–40 minutes. The biggest single factor is not the day of the week but whether your flight lands inside one of the long-haul arrival banks, when a dozen wide-bodies disembark into the same hall within an hour.

Since the April 2026 switch-over, French airports have reported 60–120 minute peaks at the border, because the biometric step reduces how many passengers each desk can process per hour. Terminal 2E, which handles most arrivals from the US, UK, the Gulf and Asia, has consistently seen the longest lines. August is one of the three busiest months at CDG, alongside July and December.

Typical non-EU passport-control waits by terminal

These are planning estimates based on reported conditions since the rollout, not live measurements. Paris Aéroport does not publish an official real-time border-queue feed, so treat any figure you see — including this one — as a guide rather than a promise. Check your arrival terminal on the live CDG arrivals board before you travel, since the terminal decides the queue you will join.

What time of day is worst at CDG?

The heaviest pressure at Terminal 2E falls in two windows. The morning bank, roughly 06:00–10:00, brings in the overnight flights from North America and Asia, which is why an 08:30 arrival can meet a queue that has already been building for two hours. The afternoon bank, roughly 13:00–18:00, is the second peak, driven by daytime arrivals from the Gulf, Asia and the US east coast.

Arrivals between the banks are usually much quicker. If you can choose your flight, one landing after 20:00, or between 11:00 and 12:30, will typically clear the border far faster than one landing at 08:30.

Can you skip the EES queue at CDG?

There is no way to opt out of EES registration itself, but three things genuinely reduce the time it takes. Which one applies to you matters, because the most commonly recommended option — Fast Track — is also the one most often misunderstood.

• Pre-enrolment pods at Terminal 2E. Paris Aéroport launched pre-enrolment pods at 2E in June 2026, letting travellers capture their passport, photograph and fingerprints before they reach the officer's desk. Terminals 2E and 2F are the best equipped. Where a pod is available, use it — the desk check afterwards is much quicker.
• Fast Track lanes. Fast Track is sold by Paris Aéroport and included for many business-class and frequent-flyer passengers at 2E. It moves you to the front of the line, but it does not shorten the biometric capture itself — your first EES registration still takes the same few minutes at the desk. • PARAFE e-gates. The automated gates are open to EU, EEA, Swiss and UK passport holders and some other nationalities, but you generally cannot use them for your first EES crossing, because the initial fingerprint and photo capture has to happen at a kiosk or a staffed desk. Once you are registered, later crossings are much faster.

The EU's Travel to Europe app lets non-EU travellers submit passport data and a facial image up to 72 hours before arrival, but France had not activated it for CDG as of late July 2026, so check whether it has gone live before relying on it.

Practical things that shave minutes off

• Budget the time properly. Allow at least 90 minutes for passport control on arrival, and up to three hours at Terminal 2E in summer.
• Have your passport out and remove any cover so the scanner can read it first time.
• Keep your fingers clean and dry. Hand cream, sweat or moisture is a common cause of fingerprint re-scans.
• Travelling as a family? Register together at one desk rather than splitting across lanes — the officer processes the group in one session.

EES and connecting flights at CDG

Where you register depends on your first point of entry into the Schengen area, not on your final destination. This catches out many travellers connecting through Paris, so it is worth being clear which of the three cases applies to you.

• Non-Schengen arrival, onward to a Schengen destination (for example New York to CDG to Bordeaux): you clear EES at CDG. Paris is your entry point, so the full border time has to fit inside your layover.
• Non-Schengen arrival, onward to another non-Schengen country (for example New York to CDG to Cairo): you normally stay airside and do not cross the border at all, so no EES registration happens at CDG.
• Arrival from inside Schengen: a flight from Madrid involves no passport control at CDG. A flight from Dublin does, because Ireland is outside the Schengen area even though it is in the EU.

If your itinerary is on one ticket, your airline's minimum connection time was set before EES and may no longer be realistic at Terminal 2E in peak season. What is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System is an automated border-control database used across all 29 Schengen countries. It records every entry into and exit from the Schengen area by travellers who are not EU or Schengen nationals. The goal is to replace manual passport stamping with a digital record that automatically tracks the 90-days-in-any-180 short-stay allowance and flags overstays.

At Paris CDG this means that the first time you cross the border after the launch, a border officer or a self-service kiosk captures your biometric data and links it to your passport. On later trips the checks are quicker because your file already exists.

Who has to register at Paris CDG?

You must be registered in the EES if you hold a non-EU, non-Schengen passport and are entering the Schengen area for a short stay. This includes travellers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, and most other countries outside Europe — even if you already hold a Schengen visa.

You do not need to register if you are:

• A citizen of an EU or Schengen country;
• A holder of an EU residence permit or long-stay visa;
• Travelling on certain diplomatic or exempt documents.

Children are registered too, but those under 12 do not give fingerprints — a facial image and the passport record are enough.

What happens at passport control

On your first EES crossing at CDG, the border process records four things:

• A scan of your passport;
• A digital photograph of your face;
• Four fingerprints;
• The date, time and place of entry or exit.

This first registration takes noticeably longer than the old stamp — typically a few extra minutes per traveller. On subsequent crossings the system re-uses your stored data, so only your face or fingerprints are matched, which is faster. EES vs ETIAS — what is the difference?

The two systems are often confused. EES is the biometric entry/exit record described above and is checked at the border. ETIAS is a separate, pre-travel authorisation that eligible visa-exempt visitors will need to apply for online before they fly. ETIAS is being introduced after EES and is not the same as registering your fingerprints at CDG.
